[Profile]
Born in Madrid in 1943. His father was Marcelo Barbero I (1904-1956), one of the most famous Spanish master craftsmen of the first half of the 20th century. When he was 13 years old, his father Barbero I passed away, and he was apprenticed in the workshop of Jose Ramirez III. Later, Arcángel Fernández, an apprentice of Barbero I, opened his own workshop, and Barbero Hijo entered as an apprentice there in 1957.
The guitars that were shipped with the 'Arcánhel Fernández Workshop' label were in fact completely handcrafted by Barbero Hijo himself, and were loved by core guitar fans as having a quality as high as that of his mentor Arcánhel.
From the late 1990s, he also produced guitars under his own original label, and was showing increasing refinement and enrichment, until his untimely death in January 2005.
His slightly rigid tone evokes the best traditions of the Spanish guitar, which were passed down to his master, Alcángel, and even to his father, Barbero I. The more he approached the last years of his life, the more his reputation grew.
[Description]
This is a flamenco model Blanca (white) made in 2000 under the Para Casa Arcangel Fernandez (Arcangel Fernandez Workshop Product) label by Marcelo Barbero Hijo, which is relatively rare for this brand. Although it was made as a flamenco model, it has been played for many years as a classical guitar with the golpe board removed and the string height adjusted. It is natural that this honest and taciturn maker's guitars became deeper and deeper towards the end of his life. This 2000 model is a late work for the builder, who would end his short life only five years later. Perhaps because it has been played as a classical guitar, the authentic Madrid sound is heard here in abundance, and its solid identity approaches that of his master, Arcángel Fernández.
This piece has a soft and gentle expression that is typical of Barbero Hijo. And the comfort characteristic of cypress is appealing. All the notes are well-defined, yet the singing is deep and full, and the musical expressiveness is a masterpiece that could only come from the Alcángel workshop. This guitar has both a sharp flamenco sensibility and classical singing, and it is a piece that will give you an insight into the depth of Spanish guitar playing. The head shape is different from the original model, which follows the Barbero - Alcángel, and is of 'workshop product' specifications.
There is one crack on the lower part of the sound board and one crack on the bass side, and one crack on the treble side of the back, but they have been properly repaired. There are some other scratches and dents throughout, but they are commensurate with the age of the instrument.
