Yuichi Shimizu was born in 1980 in Fuchu, Tokyo. He began studying classical guitar making at the age of 16, enrolling in the workshop of master luthier Yukinobu Chai, and later attended the Fernandes Guitar Engineering School, where Chai served as principal.

While still a student, Shimizu reached out in writing to Masaki Sakurai of Kohno Guitar Manufacturing, which led to his formal apprenticeship at the prestigious workshop in 2000. Over the following years, he not only developed refined craftsmanship but also deepened his understanding of the guitar’s acoustical and musical characteristics.

After leaving the Kohno workshop in 2013, Shimizu traveled extensively throughout Spain, visiting the ateliers of legendary luthiers such as José Luis Romanillos, Manuel Cáceres, Antonio Marín Montero, and Ignacio Fleta, further enriching his perspective and knowledge.

Upon returning to Japan, he received guidance and encouragement from respected luthiers Kojiro Negami and Kaoru Ono, eventually launching his own label. His approach is marked by intellectual curiosity across genres and cultures, a disciplined and introspective mindset, and an unwavering pursuit of the essence of the Spanish classical guitar.

Today, Shimizu builds approximately five guitars per year, with each instrument showcasing meticulous craftsmanship, elegant aesthetics, and a clear, classical, and deeply resonant sound. His instruments are highly sought-after by discerning players and collectors alike.

A notable highlight in his early career was when one of his guitars—built during his time at the Kohno workshop—was long used by reggae guitar legend Earl 'Chinna' Smith, garnering attention in the pages of Guitar Magazine Japan and expanding his following to unexpected musical circles.

In 2020, Shimizu was featured in an interview in Orfeo Magazine No.15, published by France’s Camino Verde, cementing his growing international reputation as one of Japan's most promising new-generation luthiers.

Yuichi Shimizu – 2025 – Romanillos Model – Custom Order No.29 – Used

This is a beautifully preserved Romanillos model built by Yuichi Shimizu in 2025, bearing the serial number No.29. It is a custom-ordered instrument that adheres closely to the specifications and tonal philosophy of José Luis Romanillos, with certain aesthetic elements such as the headstock shape and rosette design uniquely interpreted by Shimizu himself.

Faithful to the spirit of Romanillos guitars, this instrument is characterized by:

A transparent, singing treble

A round, lyrical bass

A focused, vocal midrange

Exceptional balance and projection without sacrificing warmth

Crafted with an uncompromising attention to detail, this guitar exhibits the subtle elegance and deep clarity that are the hallmarks of both Romanillos' original work and Shimizu’s own stylistic refinement.

As with all of Shimizu’s guitars, this instrument was made entirely by hand, from selection of tonewoods to final French polish finish. It represents the finest traditions of Spanish classical luthiery, filtered through the lens of a highly trained and globally-informed Japanese master.

Condition is excellent, with only the most minor signs of careful use. A rare opportunity to acquire a modern Romanillos-style guitar from one of Japan’s most highly regarded luthiers.
