Born in Valencia, Spain, in 1948, he began working as a craftsman at Esteve Guitars (Francisco Esteve), a workshop in his hometown of Valencia, at the age of 15. He became recognized as one of the best craftsmen in the workshop, and was eventually given a separate section within the workshop to develop his own line of models under his own label. His workshop consists of less than five craftsmen, including his son, and has earned a reputation for constantly shipping high-quality, fully Spanish-made guitars domestically and internationally. He offers a wide range of models, from student models to professional models for concert guitarists, 19th century models, multi-string models, and modern types such as lattice construction.

Juan Hernandez's introductory flamenco model, with spruce sound board and sycamore back and sides, is the most popular beginner model among this brand, which is known for its reasonable lineup.
