[Profile]
Rafael Mardones Diaz is now one of the most famous Chilean makers in South America. He started his own brand in 1972 under the tutelage of his father, also a guitar maker. His style is influenced by the construction methods of Ignacio Fleta and the Madrid School in Spain, and is characterized by a massive, dignified appearance and rich resonance. The guitars are made of selected quality woods and finished with high precision, and have established a position as the best brand in South America in terms of quality in both construction and sound.
The guitarist Luis Orlandini, known as the only first prize winner of the ARD Munich International Guitar Competition, is a favorite of Maldones, and Brazilian music maestro Caetano Veloso has been using Maldones guitars since 1998.

[Description]
Rafael Maldonez made in 2009 #0115, a rare one in Japan, has just arrived. The combination of high quality Western redcedar and Central and South American rosewood with the wildness that is typical of South American guitars has a majestic appearance and an appealing atmosphere reminiscent of the Madrid School of Spanish guitar making.
The internal construction is also a characteristic of the Madrid School. The curved bars arrangement clearly follows the ingenious Curved Bracing of Manuel Contreras of Spain, and Maldones has fused a bouchet-like structure here.
The Curved Bracing system is characterized by homogeneous output from bass to treble, creating cohesion and calmness throughout. Maldones' guitar has a character that is more of a modest receptiveness than a Spanish intensity, with the added gloss and mellowness of cedar, making it very appealing.
The entire piece is in good condition with a few rub marks and dents. There are no cracks or other major repairs. The head is decorated with a distinctive carving of a Copihue (Camellia japonica) flower, which is native to Chile.
This is a high quality brand from Chile, and one that should definitely be on your radar.
