[Profile]
Luis Panormo is considered one of the most major brands of 19th century guitars (romantic guitars) along with René-François Lacôte of France and Gennaro Fabbricatore of Italy. The brand was a stringed instrument manufacturer with a workshop and store in London.
The youngest of four sons of his father, Vicenzo Trusiano Panormo, the second son Joseph, the third son George, and their sons were also involved in the production of instruments, forming a large family stringed instrument brand.
His father, Vicenzo, was born in Sicily, Italy, and moved from Italy to France, England, and Ireland throughout his life, mainly making string and wind instruments during the turbulent times. Louis was born while his family was in Paris, but the family moved to London in 1790 to avoid the chaos of the French Revolution. Similarly, many immigrants flowed to England to avoid the turmoil in Europe caused by the Revolution, and the synergy of the Industrial Revolution's increased demand led to a stable business in England.
Louis' career as a guitar maker began around 1813, when his father died, and he opened a store in Bloomsbury in 1817. After his emigration to New Zealand in 1859, his nephew George Louis Panormo took over the brand, and instruments made between 1855 and 1872 were labeled as being made by Louis.
Louis Panormo's early guitars were made in the French style, generally with maple backs and sides and black painted necks and heads. Also during this period, 'Panormo Fecit' (made by Panormo) and a Bloomsbury address were printed on the label. In the late 1820s, on the other hand, he began making guitars with a fan-shaped arrangement of bars under the name 'Louis Panormo' and with the label 'Guitars In The Spanish Style'.
However, these two labels were used in parallel until a certain point in time, and therefore the one under the 'Louis Panormo' name is sometimes said to be his own work, while the one under the 'Panormo Fecit' label was made in his workshop, although this theory is not certain. The use of this design before Torres recognizes its historical importance as a link between the Romantic and modern guitars. While the body is typical of the size of 19th century guitars, it is characterized by its plumpness, depth of sound and rich volume. The distinctive head shape has become a popular design often used on 19th century guitar replicas up to the present day.
It is said that guitarist and composer Fernando Sor advised Luis' brother Joseph on guitar making when he visited England at that time.
