[Luthier Information]
Jose Antonio Lagunar is a luthier from Madrid, Spain. In 1984, encouraged by his uncle Alfred Lagunar—who was then the manager of Manuel Contreras’s workshop—he joined the same workshop to learn guitar making. After the death of Contreras I in 1994 and his uncle stepping down as manager the following year, Jose took over as manager and craftsman, continuing the brand alongside Contreras II (Pablo Contreras). Although Pablo passed away young in 2011 at age 54, Jose faithfully carried on the Contreras aesthetic, maintaining the brand with refined craftsmanship and precise construction. In 2015, he confidently began producing guitars under his own label. His guitars are distinctive for their unique structural design and bold use of exotic, rustic woods. They often feature the lavish large “wheat ear” inlay—a hallmark almost like a secret code of Contreras’s workshop—and acoustically they produce a bright, romantic sound in the Ramirez-style Madrid tradition, beloved by many players across genres.
[Instrument Information]
This is a used 2017 model “Concierto 1e Especial” made by Jose Antonio Lagunar. It embodies the aesthetics of Manuel Contreras, whom Jose studied and absorbed for about 30 years, faithfully reflecting both the striking appearance—using boldly figured cocobolo sapwood on the back and sides—and the Ramirez-style Madrid tonal qualities, meeting the expectations of fans of this school.
The top internal bracing features one harmonic bar above and below the soundhole (neck and bridge sides). Between the upper bar and the neck heel is a distinctive eye-mask-shaped reinforcement plate, with concentric circle reinforcements around the soundhole. Along the waist of the body, a 2.5cm wide and 2mm thick strip is glued from one side waist to the other. Inside this framed area, six fan braces are arranged symmetrically—one central brace divides three braces on the treble side and two on the bass side. Three additional braces, similar in size to the fans, run almost perpendicularly: one at the bridge, one near the bottom, and one between the soundhole and the bridge spaced about 7–8 cm apart, forming a lattice pattern. A triangular reinforcement plate is attached below the bridge, with its base at the tie block and apex toward the bottom. The resonance is tuned slightly below A.
The tonal balance highlights the treble to bring out melodies, while the mid and bass are not overly low but powerful enough to support the melody—characteristic of the Ramirez-style Madrid design. The sound is bright and distinctly Spanish, with expressive nuances fully present. Each note resonates richly with overtones, creating an echo effect and a grand overall sound typical of the school. Notably, the guitar responds very sensitively to plucking, producing a rich, massive tone instantly with the touch, making playing effortless. The left hand benefits equally with clear, fast slurs and richly expressive vibrato. This sensitivity creates a soundscape with abundant echo while maintaining sharply defined melodic articulation. The clarity and snap of staccatos and endings are also very evident.
There is a repair mark under the saddle on the first string side due to string skipping, but aside from minor scratches on the treble side of the fingerboard edges, the guitar remains in very clean condition overall. No major repairs such as cracks are noted. The neck and frets are in good playing condition. The neck has a standard thickness D shape, flat with well-defined edges, giving a grip close to a square feel. The string height is 3.0/4.2 mm (1st/6th string at 12th fret), with 2.0 to 3.0 mm of saddle remaining for lowering. The top is very thinly crafted, while the back and sides are relatively thick, resulting in a somewhat heavy weight of 2.01 kg.
