[Profile]
François Roudlhoff (1781-1849) was a member of the Roudolhoff family, a string instrument workshop active in the 18th and 19th centuries in Mirecourt, France, one of the best string instrument towns in Europe. François's father was Jean Roudlhoff (1733-1806), and François was the youngest of four children. In 1811, he married Anne Charlotte Mauchant, daughter of the Mauchant family, who also ran a stringed instrument workshop, and set up his own workshop. The brand has become a special feature of the French School's romantic guitars and still attracts the attention of lovers of ancient instruments because of its elegant tone and appearance. Meanwhile, François' nephew Dominique (1798-1843) and his brother Arnould moved to London and established a workshop, where they developed the first guitar in history with X-bracing construction and produced excellent guitars that would later be followed by C.F.Martin.

[Description]
This is a Romantic guitar made by François Raudolf. Probably made around 1830, it has wooden pegs. The design is superb, with a Neapolitan-style fingerboard (ebony embedded in the surface board after the 12th fretboard) contrasted with a large concentric rosette that is extremely impactful. The bridge is equipped with an ox bone saddle, and the string ends are set by bridge pins. The sound board and back and sides have been repaired in several places and have been reinforced from the inside with a piece of cloth.
The sound is very powerful for a romantic guitar, with a rich and powerful sound that is disproportionate to the small size of the body. The original elegance is well retained, and the quality of the 19th century French school is fully enjoyed on this piece.
