Luthier Information

Shunpei Nishino
Born in 1947 in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. He began building guitars in his teens and, in 1964 at the age of 17, entered the workshop of Tomozaburo Kurosawa as an apprentice. In 1969, he established his own workshop in Tokorozawa and has since pursued an independent career.

Drawing on the results of his long-standing study of Hermann Hauser I guitars—an influence he has deeply explored since the early stages of his career—Nishino has consistently produced instruments distinguished by excellent acoustic balance. He was also among the earliest Japanese makers to undertake the construction of electric-classical (nylon-string electric) guitars. Owing to his exceptional craftsmanship, he has received numerous requests from the acoustic guitar field as well, producing a limited number of high-quality models.

Nevertheless, it is unquestionably the Hauser model in which his character and aesthetic philosophy are most clearly expressed. The refined workmanship, lustrous tone, and superb acoustic balance are maintained at a consistently high level in every instrument, fully worthy of the Hauser name. The tonewoods used are also of a grade more than adequate for this price range. In terms of cost performance, his work can be regarded as among the finest produced by domestic Japanese makers.

Instrument Information

Shunpei Nishino – Model NR3
Built in 2025, 640mm scale
Used – Excellent, near-mint condition

We are pleased to offer a near-mint example of the Shunpei Nishino Model NR3. This model shares almost the same specifications as the well-known “No. 35 Hauser model” and is the most widely recognized and popular model in Nishino’s lineup. The instrument is in exceptionally fine condition.

All components related to playability—including the neck, frets, and tuning machines—are in excellent order. The neck features a moderately thick D-shaped profile, offering a compact and comfortable fit well suited to Japanese players. The fingerboard extends to 20 frets on the treble side, accommodating modern playing requirements.

String height is set at 2.7 mm (1st string) and 4.0 mm (6th string) at the 12th fret. Saddle reserve measures approximately 1.5–3.0 mm, allowing for further lowering if desired. Even in its current setup, however, the guitar is very easy to play, thanks to the exquisitely judged neck angle and a well-balanced, moderate string tension.
