〔Luthier Information〕
Born in 1931. While attending university, he began building violins, which led him to pursue the construction of stringed instruments as a self-taught luthier. In 1968, he started producing classical guitars.
His instruments gained popularity for their extremely orthodox design and their well-balanced, rich tonal character. At the same time, he was known for his uncompromising craftsmanship—famously claiming that his guitars were “absolutely unbreakable.” This solid, no-nonsense construction resonated strongly with Japanese sensibilities and earned him support not only from classical guitarists but also from players in other genres.
Stylistically, his guitars are somewhat reminiscent of traditional German instruments, with restrained ornamentation and an emphasis on substance over decoration, resulting in instruments of high integrity and quality. Today, the Chai Guitar Workshop is carried on by his son, Yukihiro, who continues the tradition.

〔Instrument Information〕
This is an alto guitar No.10 built by Yukinobu Chai, with a scale length of 530 mm.

As a brand that actively produced ensemble guitars alongside entry-level models, the quality of this instrument is fully assured. It offers a clear, resonant sound with good projection, making it a well-balanced and reliable choice among used alto guitars.

The neck shows a moderate amount of forward relief, providing comfortable playability. There is ample saddle height remaining, allowing a wide range of adjustment to suit the player’s preferences. Slight cloudiness can be seen on the back and sides, but it is minor, not visually obtrusive, and does not affect playability.

Several small dents are present on the soundboard, suggesting that the instrument was actively used in ensemble settings. There is no history of crack repairs, and overall the guitar remains in good condition. A dedicated semi-hard case is included.
